About
In The Beginning
In November 2014 several people working and living in the City of Selkirk, the rural municipalities of St. Clements and St. Andrews gathered to share ideas of how they could grow tourism in their region.
Red River North Tourism hosted the round-table discussion and
Interlake Tourism Association facilitated it.
Three Wise Women
Three women sitting at one of the discussion tables miraculously all had the same idea – home and heritage tours to launch the winter and holiday season. They were a bed and breakfast owner, a church minister and a communications consultant who had never met before. But they kept meeting on their own over the next few weeks, and discovered they shared a passion. They found mentors at the
Christmas JOY Home Tour in Guelph, Ontario who tirelessly gave them advice long distance.
Build It and They Will Come
As the trio started to share their idea with others, more and more people
joined the team. By the spring of 2015 it was clear there would be enough support from generous
local businesses to launch the inaugural Homes for the Holidays Red River North.
Doing Good
Homes for the Holidays' primary goals are to be a platform for tourism, heritage, history, culture, art, architecture, and music, and a whole lot of fun. It helps build community and creates new friendships. It has also been able over the years to make a profit which it shares with local charities that provide needed affordable and safe social housing. Since 2015 it has donated to
Nova House Women’s Shelter,
Inclusion Selkirk, and the
Homes for All Fund at the Selkirk and District Community Foundation.
